You pay GST every day and probably can’t read it. Collect 5 real bills from different purchase types — restaurant, groceries, electronics, services, medicine — decode the tax on each, verify the rates against official schedules, and find at least one oddity worth explaining.

Steps

  1. 01Collect 5 real bills (yours or family’s) across different categories. Photograph them, redacting anything private.
  2. 02Decode each: taxable value, CGST/SGST/IGST split, the rate applied, items that are exempt or composite.
  3. 03Verify each rate against the official GST rate schedule (cbic-gst.gov.in or the GST portal) — link where you checked.
  4. 04Find and explain one oddity: a 5% item next to an 18% item, a bill with no GSTIN, service charge masquerading as tax.
